More than 100 million people in China have been warned to stay indoors after at least 10 Chinese cities issued red alerts this week in response to forecasts of heavy smog.

The city of Tianjin and the provinces of Hebei and Shandong all issued the top-level alerts for the first time on December 23, reported the People’s Daily Online; while areas in south China, such as Shanghai, Hangzhou and Guangdong, are also shrouded in heavy smog.
