古罗马人在采取任何重大行动前,都会首先进行占卜,请示神灵的意见。他们相信神灵会通过一些征兆(omen.)来表达旨意。如果出现的是凶兆,他们自然会非常失望。因此,人们对那些带来凶兆的事物非常厌恶,会想尽各种办法远离这类事物。英语单词abomination就源自古罗马人对不祥之物的厌恶和躲避,它由ab(away,远离)+omin(omen,征兆)+ation(后缀)构成,原始含义就是“远离不祥之兆”,表示的是对不祥之物的憎恶。随着时间推移,它的宗教迷信含义逐渐淡化,可用来表示对各种事物的憎恶。而动词abominate其实是从它反向衍生出来的。
